Like many other European languages, the Russian language assigns a 'gender' to a noun - male, female, or neuter. It is important to know the gender of a noun because the spelling (the suffix) of any associated adjectives change according to the gender of the noun.
Once you get used to this idea it's not very complicated, but it will take a little practice at first.
Here's how to tell if your noun is a boy or a girl (or an 'it'!):
Masculine Nouns
Most masculine nouns end with a consonant (i.e., not a vowel), or the letter -й
