Extra notes regarding masculine and feminine nouns

There is also a small group of nouns ending with the "soft-sign" -ь. These nouns will either be masculine or feminine.

Unless the gender of the noun is obvious (see lesson 7e), there is no rule that will allow you to determine the gender of nouns ending with -ь, you have to learn them by heart. Since these nouns are relatively uncommon this task is not as difficult as it sounds.
