In English, when we want to make a noun plural we usually add an 's' to the end.
In Russian, things are a little more complicated (of course!), and you certainly do NOT add an 's' sound to the end of words.
Most often you will add an 'ih' sound, or less commonly an 'a' sound, to make a noun plural, but please read the detailed rules below.
Masculine Plural Nouns: All end with an 'ih'- type sound
1. For masculine nouns ending with a consonant, add -ы (see exceptions listed in next section).
Example, ресторан (restaurant) / рестораны (restaurants)

Restaurant |
 |

Pronounced: |
rest-a-rAn |
 |
Restaurants |

рестораны |
 |

rest-a-rA-nei |
2. Exceptions to the previous rule:
For masculine nouns ending in -k, -г, -x, -ч, -щ, -ж, or -ш, then add -и
Example, язык (language) / языки (languages)
 |
